lost in L.A.

hi guys, just a quick update from me. Cutting and paste (from a word document) an excerpt of my travel odyssey here. Haha...

Lost in Los Angeles 18th August 2006

............. We cleared the customs fairly quickly but waited a long time for our baggage to show up and by the time we got to the arrival hall, the sky was a perfect sunset hue, splashed with yellow and orange, having some purple and pinkish tint. The sun was a clean, orange fireball visible even to the most myopic. We took the free shuttle to Dollar-rent-a-Car to pick up our vehicle. Had a hard time lugging up the luggage!!! *sweat*

We first got a Full Size Honda, which was pathetically small. We failed miserably attempting to squeeze all our luggage in. Someone returned a Dodge Magnum, which is larger than the Honda, so we unloaded the luggage and tried squeezing everything once again. FAIL!!! Witnessing our futile attempts at loading in everything, a kind Afro-American lady who works for Dollar took pity on us and offered us a free complimentary upgrade to a Minivan. So we had to unload everything from the Dodge Magnum to the Minivan and wala, everything fitted perfectly. Thank God!!! We must have looked very pathetic spending almost an hour trying to fit our luggage in, changing from one vehicle to another, but nonetheless, all the baggage were in and I was glad…

Wait a minute??? A minivan??? I’m gonna drive a minivan??? Golly, I’ve never driven left-hand drive before, not familiar with the American roads and now I have to drive a vehicle bigger than my family’s MVP Kia??? You’ve got to be joking man… But it was a do-or-die scenario, and we or should I say, I had to push on. I quickly orientated myself to the vehicle. Adjusted this mirror, that mirror, adjusted the seats, got used to the gear which sticks out from behind the steering wheel and also the “handbrake” which was situated left to the footbrake.

The roads were pretty easy to navigate as there were ample street signs and clear directions given by the Dollar staff to get to Songyu’s aunt’s place. As instructed, we took roads that led us to the freeway, Fwy 105 then switching to Fwy 710 but our nightmare came only after we exited Ramona Boulevard. We were supposed to be very near Songyu’s aunt’s place (reads Kiangyi’s place) and were happily cruising along Garvey Avenue (grr… I’ll not forget the road’s name, ever!) which is where Kiangyi stays. However, we missed the W. Garvey Avenue sign (which we later learnt was very near the freeway exit) and traveled for more than 10 minutes along Garvey Avenue (freakingly long road!!), passed more than 50 pedestrian crossings and 20 road intersections, so we got kind of worried as we’ve got a sense of foreboding that we were heading in the wrong direction, even though we were still on Garvey Avenue. Songyu’s written directions were not very clear too as he only mentioned going straight along Garvey Avenue. We had to use of lifeline… Call Songyu.... .....

And today, we went to a 99cent store and we saw all sorts of funny product names we can't help but take photos with them!!!
