Hey I'm fine liao....
Aiyo dun anyhow listen to Reynard... Its nothing much hahaha.... Next time then tell you all... I was being silly... Ya the dinner,
Timing: Set on 11Oct, 7pm, I'll be driving so anyone want to lobang its ok. This to accomodate Elvin cause he has lessons on wednesdays to 6:45pm but for that week itself SMU is having break. Jared and Rey free on wed night right?
Place: Corduroy and Finch -
STEPPING into Corduroy & Finch, a deli-cafe that opened three weeks ago, you may be forgiven for forgetting that you are in Singapore, let alone a sleepy stretch of Bukit Timah Road near Sixth Avenue.
Instead, the high-ceilinged shop-cum-eatery looks so cosmopolitan that you would not be surprised if you walk out to see the streets of Manhattan in New York.
At the entrance is a busy serving counter where the cashier sits, surrounded by bottles and cans of gourmet food on the floor-to-ceiling shelves that line the walls.
Walk past that and you are in the cafe. There are a few tables that look into a glass-walled kitchen, where the the chefs can be seen at work behind steel shelves of colourful vegetables.
More tables are set up on a loft, which offers a nice view of the activity on the floor. And if you are up there wearing a short skirt, you would be returning the favour to those sitting below.
If that is not attraction enough, a sweet and perky waitress comes over to take your orders. If you seem hesitant, she loses no time to point out that 'the goulash is very good'. The goulash it is then.
And when your lunch companion continues to hem and haw over his choice of main course, she says cheekily with a smile: 'Okay, let me decide for you. You will have the beef tenderloin.'
Obviously taking both pride and pleasure in her job, she is what the service industry here can do with a lot more of.
And when the food comes, all her recommendations are spot-on.
The Hungarian goulash ($15) is delicious, the chunks of beef having been simmered for hours in a thick gravy that has just a hint of spice to give it a slight curry flavour.
The tenderloin ($22) is also tender and juicy, topped with what the menu calls 'a potpourri of mushrooms'. I am usually wary of ordering steak in a cafe, for the quality usually does not match that of a fine restaurant. But one bite of the perfectly-cooked piece of meat here is enough to change my mind.
Pork lovers should not miss the chance to dig into the Bavarian pot ($18). Consisting of a trio of sausages and a thick slice of pork with a
melt-in-the-mouth rind, this German dish is pork heaven with the bed of sauerkraut (pickled shredded cabbage) providing the perfect accompaniment to the meat.
The menu is made up of breakfast items as well as sandwiches, hamburgers, soups, pasta and some main courses. They may sound light, but they are not.
The sirloin burger ($18), for example, has a plump patty of hand-chopped beef, a salad in a cup as well as a nest of thick fries. It is a meal in itself and more gourmet food than fast-food.
And if you want to eat some of the dishes at home, you can buy them vacuum-packed from the store.
Such a shop-cum-cafe hybrid is not new to Singapore, but few do it as well as Corduroy & Finch.
With its perfect combination of gourmet food at reasonable prices, coupled with cheerful service and designer decor, it has set a new benchmark for the concept here.
